INFORME SOBRE EL PRIMER ENCUENTRO DE CLARINETES Y SAXOFONES  REALIZADO EN SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA, BOLIVIA

Del 17 al 21 de agosto del 2009 se realizó el Primer Encuentro de Clarinetes y Saxofones en Bolivia. Este gran evento ofreció conciertos variados (por primera vez se escuchaba al clarinete bajo como instrumento solista), un primer concurso para clarinetistas y saxofonistas, clases maestras, la formación de una Big Band y la creación de un primer Ensamble de Clarinetes.

Este fue sin duda un evento histórico en el panorama musical boliviano. No sólo se reunían por primera vez a músicos de varias ciudades de Bolivia (Santa Cruz, Cochabamba y La Paz), sino también se les dio la oportunidad de tomar parte de un primer concurso y mostrar sus cualidades interpretativas musicales). Los concursos musicales ponen a prueba el temperamento y decisión del futuro músico, y gracias al Encuentro, jóvenes saxofonistas y clarinetistas pudieron enfrentar un jurado y dar muestra de sus dotes musicales. En el caso específico de los clarinetistas, se creó un primer Ensamble de Clarinetes con verdaderos clarinetistas bolivianos – en el sentido que no todos los miembros pertenecían a una misma escuela o región, sino todo lo contrario: las edades, diversidad técnica y geográfica fue la tilde en este novedoso ensamble.

Tuve el honor de ser uno de los maestros invitados. Durante mi carrera, he podido trabajar con clarinetistas de más de 10 países y me he presentado como solista y con diversos ensambles en 19 países del mundo. Debo confesar que Bolivia fue una experiencia intensa y maravillosa. Cada uno de los participantes mostró un gran interés en asistir no sólo a los conciertos sino también en tomar parte de las diferentes clases maestras que pude dictar durante esos días musicales. Pude respirar en cada día un gran interés por parte de los participantes, lo cual demuestra que este evento realmente fue de provecho y beneficio para ellos.

La organización del encuentro fue ejemplar. Sarah Mendieta ha realizado simplemente una extraordinaria labor antes, durante y después del festival. Las atenciones personales que he recibido desde que pisé el país, hasta la asistencia para tener cualquier material a la mano para poder desarrollar mi labor como maestro e intérprete – ofrecí un recital el día miércoles 19 – fue de primer orden. Además, el festival contó con difusión debida: excelentes afiches, programas de mano detallados, anuncios en algunos diarios, e incluso el Ensamble de Clarinetes fue televisado brevemente cuando ofrecimos un impulsivo pero exitoso concierto en la calle, para la sorpresa y deleite de un nuevo público que transitaba por casualidad durante nuestro concierto. Además, un pequeño reportaje será creado por Clariperu (www.clariperu.org) para YouTube y será pronto publicado en Internet.

Iniciativas como estas no solamente hay que aplaudir: hay que apoyar. Gracias al apoyo de algunas entidades que apuestan por la cultura, este festival ha probado ser un éxito sin precedente en Bolivia, y los resultados se verán en pocos años en las nuevas generaciones, de las cuales estamos obligados de cuidar y velar por su educación musical integra. Felicito en primer lugar la labor de Sarah Mendieta y su equipo, y también a cada uno de los auspiciadores que han hecho que este festival sea una realdad. Espero poder aportar mi experiencia musical a los jóvenes bolivianos en los siguientes años, porque sin pensarlo dos veces, regresaría a seguir sembrando en este hermoso país.

WRITTEN REPORT FOR THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL SAXOPHONE AND CLARINET MEETING

SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA, BOLIVIA.

Latin America’s clarinet is wakening step by step in the area of clarinet.  Only five years ago, the only regular Festivals or Meetings took place in Mexico and Venezuela.  In the past years similar events have taken place in Uruguay, Guatemala, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and now Bolivia.  The vision and dedication of Sarah Mendieta puts Bolivia in an International map with clarinet, and the work developed is an example to follow not only in Bolivia, but in all of Latin America.  This Meeting has been a real opportunity to unite many young musicians, to discover new repertoire, create music together and increase considerably their technical knowledge, establish personal commitments of improvement and realize that music is a positive option for them.

From the 17th until the 21st of August 2009, the First Saxophone and Clarinet Meeting took place.  This great event offered various concerts (for the first time bass clarinet was heard as a solo instrument), a First Contest for Clarinetists and Saxophonists, Master Classes, the formation of a Big Band, and the creation of the First Clarinet Ensamble.

With no doubts, this was an historic event, in the Bolivian musical scenery.  Not only musicians from various cities where gathered to participate (Santa Cruz, Cochabamba y La Paz), but they were given the chance to take part in the first Contest, to demonstrate their musical and interpretative qualities.   Contests test temper and decision in a future musicians, and thanks to the Meeting, young saxophonists and clarinetists where able to deal with a jury and show their musical abilities.  In the specific case of the clarinetists, the First Clarinet Ensemble was formed with true Bolivian clarinetists –in the sense that not all of the belonged to the same school or region, on the contrary, their ages, technical background and geographical differences was an interesting aspect of this ensemble

I had the honor to be one of the guest teachers.  During my career I have been able to work with clarinetists from more than 10 countries, I have played as a soloist and with diverse ensembles in 19 countries in the world.  I have to confess that Bolivia was an intense and wonderful experience. Each of the participants demonstrated a great interest to participate not only in the Concerts, but in all of the Master Classes that I was able to impart.  I was able to breathe every day a great interest from the participants, which demonstrates that this event was really beneficial for them.

The organization was great.  Sarah Mendieta has simple done an extraordinary work, before, during and after the Meeting.  The personal assistance that I have received since I arrived to the country, and the professional assistance to have any material Handy to be able to work as a teacher and interpreter – I offered a recital on Wednesday 19th – was of first class.  Also, the Meeting had the due diffusion: great posters, complete programs, press coverage and the Clarinet Ensemble was televised in the impulsive concert we offered in the street, to the surprise and delight of the people that walked by the place.  Also a short report will be created for Clariperu (www.clariperu.org) and for You Tube.

Initiatives like this should not only be applauded, but supported.  Thanks to the support of some entities that bet on culture, this Meeting has proved to be a great success with no precedents in Bolivia.  The results are yet to be seen in the new generations that we are obliged to take care and look after a complete musical educations.  I congratulate first of all Sarah Mendieta and all of her team, and all of the supporters that have helped this Meeting take place.  I hope to be able to support with my musical experience to the young Bolivian students, because with no doubts I would come back to continue sowing in this beautiful country.

Fui invitado para participar de ese encuentro y lo hice con una intención educativa; lo hice convencido de mi obligación de plantear frente a esos jóvenes con grandes valores éticos, lo que vengo haciendo en el trayecto de toda mi vida; ni más ni menos que devolver a la sociedad latinoamericana, porque en realidad nos une el mismo origen y tenemos los mismos problemas, parte de lo mucho que recibí de mis maestros argentinos. Se estableció entre mi persona y los concurrentes al encuentro, una corriente de retroalimentación y en eso está la esencia de la expresividad.

Nunca pensé que en medio de la actual crisis mundial, tanto económica como de valores, ese congreso iba a provocar una euforia excesiva y eso me hace pensar en un pronóstico muy alentador en lo que se refiere al progreso en el arte musical de mis hermanos bolivianos, los cuales han concurrido desde varias ciudades, tales como La Paz, Cochabamba y hasta hermanos Peruanos.

El proceso de modernización iniciado produjo, como en otros países latinoamericanos, innumerables consecuencias y por cierto no la menor de ellas, es la avidez por aprender y convocar profesores que puedan transformar las metodologías educativas dogmáticas vigentes, en otras de avanzada, inspiradas en la pedagogía activa de los maestros rusos como Vigotzki y Ausubel o en el conocidísimo y relevante Paulo Freire.

Muchas preguntas se plantearon, que sirvieron para canalizar las dudas; fue un diálogo abundante y fecundo con las personas que concurrieron al encuentro. Me fui impresionado por la organización de sus ideas y por su sinceridad y también convencido de haber hecho un aporte que deja una puerta abierta a nuevos encuentros, que seguramente tendrán lugar en breve tiempo. Lo valioso es que pueden rectificar sus imperfecciones, desean preguntar, escuchar, es decir, aprender bien y para siempre la habilidad del instrumento que eligieron.

Era la primera vez que tenían oportunidad de encontrarse con colegas que compartieran el gusto por el mismo instrumento y dedicaron su tiempo, con alma y vida, a adquirir nuevas experiencias instrumentales; se formó un conjunto rítmico que luego de un breve ensayo, tuvo una producción más que respetable y fue muy aplaudido. Muchas veces se conversó hasta la madrugada con esos jóvenes y pude notar una gran confianza en adquirir habilidades para poder extraer del  instrumento los mejores sonidos.

Es posible esperar que con estos encuentros se inicie una fase de consolidación de la enseñanza instrumental en Santa Cruz y por que no en todo el territorio boliviano y que estos alumnos puedan concurrir a otros congresos para continuar su aprendizaje; quien se interesa por la música, con su actitud, eleva el nivel espiritual e intelectual y humano. Todo influye en la forma de vivir. Me fui impresionado: no son conformistas, se desviven por transcender las limitaciones que todavía  tienen, ya sea por falta de profesores, de acceso a instrumentos de calidad, de partituras para todos los estilos y lo más importante, de práctica grupal.

En este encuentro se creó un estado de inspiración irresistible; los alumnos tenían la seguridad de lograr los objetivos soñados, aunque más de una vez se vean enfrentados con la adversidad.

I was invited to participate in this Meeting and I did with a educational purpose; I participated convinced of my obligation to portray the young students with great ethical values, what I have been doing in my everyday life; nothing more than returning what I have been given through Latin-American society, because essentially we have the same origins, the same problems.  I was happy to establish an ongoing current of feedback.

I never thought that in the actually world crisis, financially and ethical, this Meeting would provoke such excessive euphoria, and this makes me think of a very prospective referring the progress in musical arts of my fellow Bolivian brothers, that have attended from various cities such as La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and even the country of Peru.

The process of modernization has produced, like in other Latin-American countries, innumerable consequences and one of the is the vigor to learn and to call teacher who can transform educative dogmatic methodologies, in other inspired by the Russian teachers like Vigotzki and Ausubel or int eh known and relevant Paulo Freire.

A lot of questions were asked, that served to clear out doughts. It was an abundant and vigorous dialogue with all the people participating.  I was impressed by the organization of their ideas and sincerity, and also convinced to have made a valuable contribution that leaves an open door to new Meetings, that will positively take place shortly.  The valuable aspect is that they can correct their mistakes; they want to ask, listen and learn well the way to play the instrument they chose.

It was their first time they had the opportunity to meet with other colleagues that shared their passion for the same instrument and dedicated time, soul and life to acquiring new musical experiences. An ensemble was formed that after a brief number of sessions had a more than respectable presentation and was applauded.  Many times we talked even in late hours with this young students and I noticed their eagerness to acquire abilities to perform the best sound possible.

It is possible to expect that with these Meeting a new phase of musical teaching in Santa Cruz and why not in the rest of the country so that these student can attend other Meetings to continue their learning.  Those who are interested in music, through their attitude they can elevate their spiritual, intellectual and human life.  It also influences their way of living.  I left impressed.  They are not compliant, they want to transcend the limitations the still have, due to the lack of teachers, access to quality instruments, music, and most importantly to work in groups / ensembles.

In this Meeting an irresistible state of inspiration was created.  The students had de certainty to achieve their objectives dreamed, even if more than once they were confronted by the adversity.
